FARSIDE INCIDENT, THE

The event that almost started a World War.
When the New Soviet participant in the Advanced Tactical Flight Squadron at Station 5 was recalled to Moscow, his teammates conducted their own investigation which led them to believe the New Soviet's were preparing a pre-emptive strike against the United Network Command Authority.   Under the direction of their leader, Robert MacManus, this squadron violated orders and while pretending to run a war games exercise they crossed into restricted new Soviety territory on the farside of Luna, catching the invasion force off-guard before they could strike.   The Squadron was correct in their conclusion but they had failed to notify anyone in their chain of command.
These were actions that would have been dismissed considering the results, had the events not been made public by MacManus' fiance and Journalism major Dawn Legato.   The 655 Squadron was disbanded and split up with every member being assigned to a different Outer System posting.
Among the 655 was Wing Leader Finnegan.   Although he wouldn't testify against his Squadmates, and did nothing to avoid his part in the action, Finn refused his outer system assignment to the Supercarrier Enterprise (SCC-465).   He was given the option of transferring to Ground Ops, which he did.   His specific reasons for accepting this lateral move remain personal.

FREESTATES

Short lived Republic created by Freemen in the Great Plains region of the United States of America during the early days of the Eco-Crisis. Originally just a states rights movement, the Heartland Freestates declared Independence from America during a time where the larger union simply did not have the wherewithal to stop them. Aggressive tendacies by the Freestates included invasion of Western Canada (causing creation of WestCan) and eastward expansion of American states as far as Illinois before internal dissention led to collapse of the Republic. By this point the region, which had been fighting depopulation for decades, became Buffalo Commons and was left to nature for more than a century.
