CHAPTER 9

Melissa could not regain control of herself. She just screamed and screamed and screamed. She flung her body onto Patricia's, cradling Patricia in her arms.

The man stood there like a zombie.126 After his shock wore off he grabbed Melissa, tearing her away from the horrifying scence.* They walked slowly back to the place where they were to sleep. Melissa felt that she was on the virge* of insanity, but she was not yet insane. They were all deadly silent. Jill and Melissa sat on the log. The man walked dumbly towards where he had last seen the blanket.

Melissa suddenly grabbed Jills* arm127 and demanded "Was he with you?" Jill didn't understand.

Again, "Was the man with you all the time, while Pat and I were gone?"

Jill looked at Melissa's128 desperate eyes and stuttered "Um, I can't remem ... no, he went away and said he was looking for the puppy"

"Oh, god"

Melissa raced to the bloody scene. Melissa searched for footprints or any129 sign the man had been here before the death or at the death of Patricia.

There lieing* just above pat's hand was a clue.

In the sand pat had written "Cynth"130 "Cynth" Melissa thought "that could only mean Cynthia and that's131 Jill's middle name. The man must have been saying Cynthia when and if he killed Patricia.

Melissa knew that there was a connection somewhere. She wrote this on the paper132 Pat had given her. She would try to calm herself and sleep tonight before133 trying to figure out the connection.

The next morning Melissa woke up cold and hungry. She had no watch but134 it was still fairly dark so she thought it was about 4:00 a.m. Jill, who was lying beside her was in a deep sleep, as was the man. Whitey was curled up beside Jill. Melissa could not tear her eyes from Jill, she was so peaceful almost looking happy. This led Melissa to remember135 the connection between what Pat136 had written down on the sand and Jill's middle name.

Maybe the man had known Jill before and had called her Cynthia instead of Jill or maybe Jill got her middle name from a relitive* like her mother.

"I'm imagining things" she thought. "We've got to get out of here before we're all killed" she thought, becoming panic stricken. "I could be his next target, or Jill!

"But how can we get off this island, how." She cryed* softly "I shall go insane, yes crazy!!"

She started running around like a madman. She fell onto a sharp rock and cut her thigh badly. The blood poured out fast, but she didn't care. Finally, she fell to the ground in exhaustion.

Soon after the man and Jill strolled by her and came to her rescue. The man took one look at her leg and rushed to a small palm tree and grabbed a big leaf and some thin, rope-like bark.

"You should have called us" he said.

137He bent down and placed the leaf on the ground and just above it at the edge of the leaf tied the rope tightly around her leg.

"There" he said and looked at Melissa. But her eyes were not on the wound, but on him. She looked deep in his eyes and138 saw terror. Now she knew he killed139 Patricia.
