CHAPTER 5

Slowly they approached the large logs.69 Patricia was grasping onto the log and Melissa was on the side of the log which was very ackward.*

"Kick!" he shouted.

The children started kicking fairly hard and in no time they were on their way. Jill caught sight of a sea snake and screamed in fright.

"It's alright" Melissa reasurred* her, "It won't hurt you."

Soon they were at the tiny island. Patricia's foot hit a rock which cut her delicate skin. However it did her no harm being such a small70 cut.

"Are we going to stay here Mr.?" Jill asked timidly.

The man smiled at her in almost a kind way and answered, "No, I'm going to take you to an island far away."

"But I'm so cold!" Jill said in a thin voice.

The man looked at the three shivering girls and softly as if71 ashamed of himself said, "Follow me girls, we will stay on this island tonight but tomorrow we're going to an island far from here or anywhere."

He led them to a dingy cave that looked much like the kind of caves you see in a tarzan film. Jill approached it with nervousness and the others went right in; glad to have the warmth of the cave. The man grabbed Patricia and said, "I'll be right back, so don't try anything because I've got her72 right here." Together they walked off. They did not talk, mainly because Patricia was terribly unfriendly towards the man and had good reason to be. He led her to a boat. It was a small motor boat and Patricia got excited when she saw it. The man saw her eyes widen and said, "You'd better not try anything."

Patricia glared at him and he glared back. He bent into the boat to get a blanket and Patricia heaved him in and started to run. He got himself up, grabbed the blanket and ran. Patricia decided that running would do her no good and she would have to hide. She ran behind a thick palm tree and found it hard to breath silently. The man saw she was not ahead of him any more and figured she must have hidden. He stood still to listen for her breathing and heard it. He quickly grabbed her. She struggled but his tight grip held her in.

"You are such a foolish girl" said the man as he shook his head. He kept a hold of her as he walked back to the cave. He set her down once they were in the cave.

"Your friend just tried a stupid thing and next time one of you try anything I'll punish you harshly !" he said.

"I brought this blanket so you three will be warm. Now I73 want you girls to cuddle up."

They did as he said and just sat there, none of them sleeping. The man planned on staying awake because he did not want the children to escape. Suddenly the man remembered that he did not know the children's names and asked, "What are your names please, are you sisters?"

"Oh yes ... I mean no" Melissa stuttered, "We are not all sisters, just Patricia and I."

"And who, may I ask is Patricia?" he said very curtiously.*74

"I am" Patricia said.75

"Oh, I see and what is your name?" he said as he pointed to Melissa.

"My name is Melissa76 Anderson" she said,77 "and the youngest one is Jill um ... I think her middle name is uh ... Cynthia ... yes, that's it, Jill Cynthia Monroe."

"I know" he said.

"You did not know Jill's name" Patricia stated.

"Well, well you three certainly have pretty names!" the man said, trying to run off the subject.

Patricia smiled but Melissa rembered [sic] that they were hostages and did not smile.78

"That's nice,79 what is your last name?" he asked.

"Oh, Anderson," Patricia said.

"How old are you three" he questioned.

"I am 12" Melissa said: "Patricia is 10 and Jill is ..."

"Seven" he said.

"Yes, how did you know" asked Jill.80 There was no answer.

Suddenly it dawned on Melissa that they still did not know his name. She debated whether or not she would ask him and decided she would; "What is your name?" she asked with curiousity,*

The smile on his face disappeared and a pinched81 look spread over his face.

"Stupid kids" he said aloud, "always asking questions, now shut up and go to sleep!"

The friendlyness* in him disintigrated* emediately.* There were so many questions Melissa wanted to ask him, especially what his name was and where he came from. Also how he got himself in this kind of mess. Why did he do this? Was/Is82 he lonely or does he like to see people suffer?

Melissa realized she could ask very few of these questions, but never-the-less* wondered.

Finally she, Patricia and Jill83 dozed off into a very deep sleep but the man remained awake all night.
