CHAPTER 1

The loud ring of the phone awoke Melissa. Wearily she rose out of bed and picked up the receiver.

"Hello?"

"Hello, Melissa." It was Mrs. Monroe, "Could you babysit Jill for me today?"

"I guess so, 1when?"

"Oh, in about 15 minutes2, I'm sorry it's a little early to be phoning you, but I was afraid that if I left it too long you'd be out with one of your friends and I wouldn't be able to get a babysitter."

" Oh it's3 alright, I wasn't asleep anyhow" she lied.

"I'm glad you can sit for Jill because she thinks your [sic] just great."

"I'm glad, I'll be over in a few minutes then, Bye."

"Bye."

Sighing contentedly4 Melissa sauntered over to her dresser and opened a drawer. She pulled out a pair of run down jeans with a "Kiss My Patch" sewed onto the knee. She put on the jeans and her favorite halter that had her name written in a thick felt over it.

She brushed the hair off her face and pretending she was a graceful movie star she moved her hips from side to side as she walked down the stairs, for she was still only a child of 12.

She poured some corn flakes in a bowl and ate them5 dry. Writing her mother a note she gelt a twinge6 of panic7, she had told her best friend she would go shopping with her. "Oh well" she thought.8 She finished her note that read:

       Dear Mom:
Gone to sit Jill Monroe and will be back around 3:00.
       Love, Melissa.9

Melissa went to the phone and dialed her friend's number.

" Is Arlene there?"

"Speaking" Arlene answered.

"Hi Arlene, it's me, Melissa10. I have to babysit Jill, my neighbor so can we hold off the shopping till tomorrow?"

"Tomorrow! Tomorrow's Sunday and the only place open is the Eaton's mall and that's 1011 miles away!"

"Well, maybe we can go after I babysit Jill, Sorry, Goodbye." Melissa said firmly,12

She went to the closet and got her red jacket and walked out the door.
