CHAPTER 4

The man had come to the beach but was passing it. He showed no signs of stopping. Patricia remembered that the man had asked them where the beach was and she now wondered why he was passing it. She decided she would ask him but then thought better of it. Insane thoughts started rushing thourgh* Patricia's head. Was55 he going somewhere to kill us? Or was he going to leave us somewhere to die? Would he try and rape us young as we are?

* * *

Jill was clutching onto a torn Raggedy-Ann doll that she had owned since she was a baby. She was more of an optisitic* thinker. While she was gazing through the window ahead of her she thought "He will probably let us go and then Mommy will find us and56 they'll catch him, and put him in jail,"

Melissa was still searching57 her mind for any possible escape. We cannot get out of the car it's moving too fast" she thought. She glanced at the car spedomiter* and noticed they were going forty miles an hour. 58 Again she was strained59 for an idea for a successful escape. The only way the [sic] could dare to escape would be when the car stopped. Suddenly she thought of60 the screaming contest she had won at an outdoor birthday party. That's what they would do, scream! No,61 that wouldn't work if they were in a secluded area but they could run!" she thought hopefully, "No, he looks like a62 musculare* man, and he'd definitately* cautch* Jill." A headache was coming on and she started thinking it would be impossible to escape. Tears rolled down her hot, rosy cheeks. She avoided the others so they wouldn't get upset.

They'd been driving for about half an hour now and the car finally stopped. Jill was dazed and she felt the car stopping. She fidgeted about getting ready to get out. Her thiys* were hot with sweat and were sticking to the leather-like seat covers.

Just as Melissa had thought they were in a deserted area. It was a beatiful* little beach. The sand was as smooth as silk and the salted water was as clear as a newly cleaned window.

The man turned his head towards the back seat. He looked at the three pathetically* sad children and said: "Get out of the car."

Jill's curiousity* started arising as she climbed out of the63 Pontiac.

It was now dusk and the girls were faintly chilly. The man pulled the keys from the egnition* and put them in his pocket. He approached the three girls. "See that small island out there?" he asked as he pointed to the west. The girls nodded. The man looked satisfied and stated,"We are going to swim to it." Patricia64 looked a little worried, Jill looked confused and Melissa looked very worried and stuttered65 "Well — ah ... we can't!"

"And just why not!" he said loudly66. Patricia rushed into the conversation.

"Jill can't swim very well, only a weak dog paddle!"

"Well, we'll get there no matter what" he said thoughtfully.

He glanced at a large log near to the shore. And calmly with a tinge of excitement said:

"We're going to float to the island on that log so strip down to your underwear!"

Modest Patricia felt herself turning red and said, "But why can't we just swim in our clothes?!"

"Because you'll drown, dummy" he answered in disgust.

"Oh" she said in a very low tone of voice.

Jill was the first to start undressing, for she was was [sic] the youngest and didn't mind if this strange man saw her underwear. Melissa then started to take off her beat-up old jeans. She left on her halter because she knew that would do her no harm if she had to swim. Patricia then took off her yellow cordiroy* gouchoes* and underneath werd* red and black striped bikini underwear. She took off her plain white T-shirt and beneath her top67 was an undershirt much to her relief.68 Meanwhile the man was taking off his pants and even more conveniently had a pair of swim trunks underneath. He took off his patterned shirt a [sic] went towards the log and pushed it into the water.

Melissa suddenly thought that if she got a hold of the knife she would have protection. She ran to his pants and searched the pockets. He suddenly turned around and yelled "Hey!" Melissa jerked around in fright. He lifted his hand up showing the knife and said, "You looking for this honey?" He laughed and commanded them to grab a hold of part of the log and to make sure they brought their clothes.
