LAGRANGE STATION 5

UNITED NETWORK
SPACE AUTHORITY

SPACE COLONY DIVISION: STATION 5

LAGRANGE 5 or STATION 5 as it is commonly called was the first orbital Space Colony built and for the longest period was the largest man-made structure in space.

Construction began in the Lagrange 5 zone (60 degrees behind Luna in the moon's orbit around the Earth) on January 31,2184 with a multi-national/trans Global corporate commitment which was the purcursor to the United Network.

Initially Station 5 (named solely for its position in Lagrange space) was little more than a tiny platform used by construction crews as living quarters while the poly-synthetic carbon materials manufactured on the various Lunar bases (primarily RIGEL Aerospace's COMMONWEALTH Base) were launched from the moon's surface with high speed Mag-Lev launchers to this precise parking spot.

Over the next ten years assembly continued, focusing first on what is now the lower DOCKING BAY.  While space crews continued tirelessly assembling the three OFFICE POD CLUSTERS, other crews, within the pressurized environment of the DOCKING BAY began pre-fit final assembly of the rotating LIFE WHEEL.

Construction continued for another five years before the LIFE WHEEL was complete and the top most COMMUNICATIONS/COMMAND POD was anchored in place (August 6, 2210).  The OBSERVATION DECK and RESTAURANT was opened to the public on September 6, 2212.  Because it has the most spectacular view of any Lagrange facility the restaurant "FESSO's" has a 240 day waiting list.

For the first ten years the LIFE WHEEL rotated and was the only place on the station with gravity.  It continues to rotate while crews, during normal facility maintenance and overhaul, replace the original standard decks with Micro-Cell Gravity Panels.  Once that is completed (expected some time in 2242) the LIFE WHEEL will be slowed to a standstill and anchored in place thereby reducing stress on the core.
