2.55 years have passed on Earth in the 3 months MacMANUS has spent making his way to his first stop.
As RIGEL THREE approaches TOPANGA (Sirius) MacMANUS is plagued by doubts about his diplomatic ability and the Topangan language but a chance encounter with an outgoing Topangan vessel could ruin his chances before he even gets there.
