A road trip almost gets everyone killed, but turns out to be only an omen of things to come for a team that won't be same by time all is done.

SYNOPSIS:

A few months later work is progressing quickly preparing the ship and crew for its competancy challenge, but with relations to Alison strained MacManus is caught gravitating too close with new teammate Greta. Bill Magellan convinces all involved to hold their thoughts and then takes MacManus down to Earth for a tour of the Advanced Driver Program at Cold Lake Alberta, WestCan.
They're met at Calgary Spaceport by Melbourne Girney who haphazardly guides them out to the proving ground but along the way they're attacked by a sentient probe out to kill them.
MacManus had been at a pretty low ebb until this point but he's somehow invigorated by the attack and the rest of the trip proceeds pleasantly, despite Mel's continual run-ins with ArrowHead Project leader Dr. Shindar.
The trip is cut short though when the commercial transport Jack MacManus was on is destroyed. Mel helps MacManus and Magellan return to Station 5 directly and witnesses the disintigration of all his plans.
Alison has agreed to pass on the Faster-Than-Light competition, and stay behind on the Barnard Star mission to take Jack's place so Robert won't have to. They'll get married, to keep the stock from falling, but only for a ten-year term marriage.
The team can't find Greta either, which is very troubling as she seems to be somehow connected in the death of Jack.
Mel helps search Rigel Three for explosives, finding and disabling the one planted aboard which motivates MacManus to offer a slot on his team, which she happily accepts.
It's a bitter sweet turn of events as Team Rigel moves to trials for the final part of the competition.
