THE PREMISE:
A Canadian hockey team begun two generations ago by a French family is in financial trouble but can their salvation come in the form of an American Ladies man who knows nothing about the country or the sport?
When the youngest generation of the family (MELODIE, late 20 's female) assumes management of the organization, the American brewery that is part owner decide to send their own representative to Canada, he is an All-American MBA (OWEN, 30's male) who knows nothing of Hockey or Canada.
Thus begins a battle of the sexes, between Anglo and Francophone, between the Canadian Identity and the American Empire. All for control of... PUCKTOWN.
THE LOCATION:
The city is Ottawa. A city of two cultures living side by side. The team is the OUTAOUAIS LAVA, named for the municipal region on the Quebec side of the river (pronounced "ooo-tah-way"). Most of the action however is in the front office of the team and on the sidelines or in the commentator's booth.
THE CHARACTERS:
- MELODIE SPARKS - new General Manager of team / 3rd generation
- "Tomboy" Melodie's Grandfather started the team and she's been raised her whole life on the game in this most rabid of hockey towns, but despite the influence of her sophisticated mother she's still a brusque little scrapper like her Anglo father, however her lack of Management experience has caused some stakeholders to insist she can't run the team alone.
- OWEN POST - hot shot MBA American representative of Brewery/owners
- "Ladies Man" Owen is a slick, opportunistic American Executive MBA who doesn't know a double-double from a hat-trick, and never met a woman he didn't like, or eventually bed. And while it seems he's been sent up to Canada as punishment for a big idea that backfired perhaps it has something to do with his "Ladies Man" hobby, either way he's there to oversee Melodie and get the team back to profit, not put more notches in his belt.
- UNCLE FRANKO BERTHIER - on-air personality/part owner of team
- Franko is still stinging from his father's decision to give control of the team to his Anglo brother-in-law, an act which has been fanning his Separtist flames. When his sister’s marriage went south Franko began a campaign to get rid of his Anglo brother in law and transfer power to his Niece. It worked when Melodie's father suffered a heart attack but none of Franko's plans ever work out as he hopes.
- GEORGE RUNION - team coach
- Melodie's father mentored George when he first came on board and he feels a need to do the same with Melodie now that she's in charge, but he's also fond of her in other ways that he just can't seem to reconcile.
- ANNIE BERTHIER - Melodie's mother / Franko's sister / ex-wife to former GM
- Annie's interest in hockey is limited to how much of the profit she gets, which is why her father gave half her stake in the team to her Anglo husband. In her mid-50's and finally free of a marriage where she felt more like the other woman to a sport, she is blossoming into a woman of refined passions and little regrets, unfortunately or fortunately for her that includes cougaring some of the team's more athletic players.
- DAD (Tom Sparks) - former General Manager of team
- Never seen directly, Tom is recovering in Florida from a heart attack brought on by Uncle Franko's relentless campaigning to get him fired, a very nasty divorce and a few losing seasons. Pleased to see his daughter assume control of the team he's still doing what he can behind the scenes to help the team succeed.
- MARCEL HABONEAR - hockey player / boytoy for Melodie's mother
- The team's star hockey player. Former boyfriend of Melodie and current boytoy for her mother, Annie, "Habo" has nothing to say preferring to let his physical exertions speak for themselves, both on and off the ice.
- KATHARINE - co-host of "Franko Flash"
- Female Anglo sports commentator who does everything she can to keep Uncle Franko's rants from losing them sponsors.
