LITURGICAL LEXICON

ST. NICHOLAS CHAPEL

St. Nicholas Chapel was dedicated on November 7, 1969 in honour of St. Nicholas Church, which had closed its doors a year earlier.

Trinity has been much enriched by gifts from the Lakeview church, the most notable is the historic white altar lamp hanging in the chapel.

Long before St. Nicholas was established, a tiny church had been built on a spit of land stretching out into Lake Ontario, called Fisherman's Island.

This narrow piece of land reached across the bay, opposite the Toronto mainland.   In 1915, cottages were demolished and the land was dredged to form a new Toronto harbour.

Founders of the new Lakeview parish were allowed to bring over fittings from the island church for their new parish.   Among them was the intricately designed altar lamp.

Before the present ambry was fitted in the re-table behind the altar in the main sanctuary, reserved bread and wine were kept in the St. Nicholas Chapel ambry.   While it was there the altar lamp was kept alight.

St. Nicholas Chapel is a quiet place filled with memories and artifacts from both the Lakeview parish and Trinity Church.

Parishioners are encouraged to visit the chapel.   It is a small private place for reflection, rest and prayer.
