ALTAR CANDLES

The use of candles in churches probably goes back to early times when lights used in processions were placed around the altar.   Thomas Cranmer in his Visitation Articles (1547), suggested that two lights were permitted on the altar.

Today, as we look up at Trinity's altar, we can see the two candles called Eucharistic lights and representing the two natures of Christ the Light of the world.   They are lit only during communion services.   The side candles or tapers which can be carried during special services, are Office Lights and are lit at all services except Good Friday.

The server lights the candles before the Eucahrist and extinguishes them immediately after, as before and after a meal.   The Christ Candle on the left or Gospel side of the altar is never lit first or extinguished last as it must never be left burning alone.

Trintiy, Port Credit is fortunate to have an active Servers' Guild.   The group called the Order of St Simon of Cyrene, was founded in 1941.   Members were young men only and their role was to serve and assist in the worship of the church.   In 1967, the late Dr. G.B.R. (Bev) Collier took over the training of the boys and acted as counsellor.

Young women were finally invited to join the Guild in 1982.   Dr. Collier's dedication to the group is marked by his gift of the two tapers on either side of the altar, which he designed and constructed to honour all Servers past and present.   He also built and donated the tall candle holders which decorate the pews at Christmas and other special occasions.

Young people from church school grades 5 to 8 and up are encouraged to become servers, to learn the disciplines of the sanctuary and become part of the ministry of the church.
