FINNEGAN'S SQUAD: "PAX Romana"
BEGIN OPENING ACT:
EXT. SPACE - ASTEROID BELT
A string of small asteroids are sparsely spread out among the
debris field of what might have once been a world in orbit
around Sol between Mars and Jupiter.
On the surface of one of the larger asteroids in view we can
see a circuit of domes and halls. It is a small man-made
facility on this larger than normal asteroid. It is also
unlike any other facility we've seen thus far.
EXT. SPACE - NEAR ASTEROID STATION
What seems like a vista of a billion stars soon becomes
something else as dark clad people in lithe space-suits drift
by.
They glide toward the Asteroid with the Station. In each
hand is a baton, somewhat like a police baton with it's tiny
handle ninety degrees to the longer end.
As the five forms get closer to the Station we see that the
batons have controls in the grip that trigger a strange glow
along the wand, the figures use them for their designed
purpose, tiny anti-gravity units that are directed to slow
their descent onto this asteroid.
Each of the figures touch down without notice, most
gracefully, although one will plant a magnetic boot on the
Station exterior hull and stick, causing him to float forward
like a balloon float caught in a breeze during a parade.
EXT. SPACE - SURFACE OF ASTEROID - ASTEROID STATION HATCH
Once secured on the outer hull of this station the five move
as one, toward an exterior hatch on the far end of the
station.
Here they each pull a piece of equipment from their
respective packs, and through jump-cuts, quickly assemble an
access port.
Triggered the port overrides the internal controls and the
air-lock soon depressurizes and opens for them.
INT. ASTEROID STATION - HALL
The interior hall is different from any other we've seen
before too. The ceiling of the hall arched as though the
designers patterned it on the curved shape of a light bulb.
The colour of the ceiling is a gentle blue and the overall
effect is to make one believe they are walking down a hall
out in the open sky on a sunny day.
The five black-clad figures, face masks still in place, enter
the hall and move down it in a quiet, coordinated and covert
manner. The leader is following the readings from a hand
held display they're holding.
They quickly arrive at their target. A panel which they
smoothly force open.
Inside the panel are various modules. One of the team
quickly begins to remove them, placing the items carefully in
slots on a pack which, once full, is closed and secured on
the back of one of the others.
As quickly they seal up the hatch. Move back to the point of
entry and then depart.
EXT. SPACE - SURFACE OF ASTEROID - ASTEROID STATION HATCH
The five exit, reseal the outer side of the hatch. One of
them runs the air-lock cycle so that it as it was before they
arrived, while the other four re-pack the unit they used to
breach the Asteroid Station.
Then, ready to go, confirmed by five "thumbs up", they
trigger their forearm batons and rise, one at a time, back
into the blackness.
EXT. SPACE - NEAR ASTEROID STATION
They fade from view, disappearing into the darkness.
EXT. SPACE - AT RUNABOUT
An equally well camouflaged small but wide bodied craft
drifts into view, well, more accurately it blocks out the
view of the billions of stars with its roughly boxy shape.
The five figures close on it and as they do an exterior hatch
slides open like the side door on a mini-van.
One by one they enter and once inside the outer hatch closes.
The faint drivers at the back of it glow ever so slightly and
the vehicle departs the scene.
EXT. SPACE - AT ASTEROID STATION
No one is the wiser.
EXT. SPACE - AT STATION 5
The large United Network station continues its slow transit
some 60 degrees behind Luna in the moon's orbit around Earth.
INT. STATION 5 - SECONDARY AIR-LOCK
The narrow hallway leading to this Airlock is congested with
a line of Security Troops. Standing in the middle of the
hall is their Squad Leader.
Finn comes around the corner. His expression is a little
confused by all those assembled.
FINN
Captain Graydon?
The Squad Leader turns to Finn and steps forward welcoming
him.
GRAYDON
Finnegan. Thank you for joining us
on such short notice.
FINN
I was ordered to. Any idea why?
GRAYDON
You were specifically requested for
this.
FINN
Me?
GRAYDON
Aye.
Graydon turns to the airlock hatch as the docking clamp
locks. The inner hatch opens as Finn speaks.
FINN
By whom?
Before them stands a senior member of the New Soviet.
ANDREIVICH
By me.
Finn's head pivots sharply at the sound of the voice.
FINN
Gregory?
ANDREIVICH
Hello, Finn.
Finn steps forward as though to shake hands with the visitor.
Instead he rears up and strikes the visitor with a sharp
right cross, knocking the diplomat to the ground.
The members of the Security Services branch rush towards
them, half wanting to help the fallen visitor up and arrest
Finnegan, the other half wanting to take their shot at him.
FINN
Much better, thank you for asking.
